Extra Credit
Goal: to inspire others to read a good book.
- A Reading Minute (RM) is worth as much extra credit as a normal or daily assignment is worth, typically 10 points.
- To get full credit, the RM must be interesting.
- That means it should be clear that you put some thought into what you read (not a completely random passage) and that you put some effort into preparing (timing, flow, etc.).
- You can do at most one RM per quarter for extra credit.
- At most, one person can do an RM per class period.
- Sign up for the day you want in advance.
- You can do that by emailing me.
- Students are encouraged to sign up for the near future to avoid such problems as described below:
- If doing an RM too inconvenient or impossible because
- school is cancelled
- you are absent
- Mr. Bulgrien is absent
- there is a test/assembly/other activity that makes doing an RM too inconvenient or impossible,
- et cetera,
- school is cancelled
- then sign up for another day.
- RMs do not "slide down" to the next day if someone else already signed up for the next day.
- If doing an RM too inconvenient or impossible because
- The RM must be from a book, magazine, printout, or something digital accessed on a device or phone.
- In other words, it must be reading, not reciting from memory.
- Read for 45 seconds to 90 seconds.
- Less than 45 or more than 90 will result in less than maximum credit, typically half of the maximum.
- Again, you should put a little time into preparing to do this.
- I recommend doing a practice run at least once.
- RMs can only be done during your class period.
- No RMs during exam week.
