COMPARE AND CONTRAST:
USING A THESAURUS TO SOUND SMARTER:
- boring:
- "While these things are similar, they are also quite different."
- No one cares! Why does that matter at all?
- "While these things are similar, they are also quite different."
- better:
- "Although there are similarities between these, their differences are more revealing/important/interesting because they show us that..."
- or the reverse:
- "Although there are differences between these, their similarities are more revealing/important/interesting because they show us that..."
- "Although there are similarities between these, their differences are more revealing/important/interesting because they show us that..."
USING A THESAURUS TO SOUND SMARTER:
- This is not a terrible idea once in a while, but don't over do it.
- Changing too many words like this makes your writing sound artificial, like it's not your authentic voice.
- A worst-case scenario is that it makes it sound like you copied some other writing and changed a few words around.
